Today, Ecommerce Europe officially kicks off the Global E-commerce Summit in Barcelona, Spain. For the 9th edition of the annual conference, over 400 merchants, business and policy makers will come together to discuss trends and developments that are shaping e-commerce and its future. With speeches of key industry figures and panels that touch upon relevant current issues in e-commerce, the event is bound to inspire insights and initiatives.
From 13 to 14 June, Barcelona is the place to be for anyone active in the e-commerce sector. Unlike previous years, Ecommerce Europe’s annual conference is not just a part of the Global E-commerce Summit, but has been fully merged with it. This makes Ecommerce Europe a fully-fledged host of the Summit. In particular, Ecommerce Europe is organizing a high-level “Policy Arena”. The arena revolves around four panel discussions, that focus on policy themes that Ecommerce Europe sees as key in boosting cross-border e-commerce: consumer legislation, new VAT rules, innovation in the parcel delivery market and the emergence of digital currencies & blockchain in e-commerce.
New Manifesto on e-commerce
At the Global E-commerce Summit, Ecommerce Europe will also be launching its new Manifesto on how the European e-commerce market can be stimulated to reach its full potential. Ecommerce Europe has been working together with all European stakeholders to rapidly remove remaining barriers in cross-border e-commerce. For policymakers, this entails supporting market initiatives, abolishing superfluous legislation and considering new regulatory structures when truly necessary, for instance in order to achieve a greater EU-level of harmonization.
Full harmonization of legislative frameworks is the only way forward for the European Union to create a real Digital Single Market. In addition, Ecommerce Europe calls on EU legislators to ensure that new rules will be technologically neutral and promote security, innovation and the highest level of checkout convenience. The EU institutions are working on it and Ecommerce Europe supports their efforts in reducing barriers to e-commerce.
Combining policy and business at the Global E-commerce Summit
Marlene ten Ham, Secretary General of Ecommerce Europe, is proud of what the association and BBP Media, the organizing partner, have achieved this year. “E-commerce is continuously growing and this creates new opportunities but also challenges for retailers. At the same time, new rules and regulations revolving around e-commerce are being introduced on a regular basis. In my opinion, this Summit addresses both the business and the policy side of e-commerce, and makes them interact”. The Summit provides businesses the opportunity to interact and network with peers, while giving them a platform to learn more about how innovation and new policies will shape the future of e-commerce.
